Empowerment Tip A key strategy for projecting self-confidence is to display peak performance. The term refers to much more than at?tempting to do your best. To achieve peak performance you must be totally focused on what you are doing. When you are in the state of peak performance you are mentally calm and physically at ease. Intense concentration is required to achieve this state. You are so focused on the task at hand that you are not distracted by extraneous events or thoughts. The mental state achieved during
peak performance is akin to a person's sense of deep concentration when
im?mersed in a sport or hobby. For example, on days tennis players perform way
above their usual game, they typically comment: "The ball looked so large today.
I could read the label as I hit it." On the job, the focus and concentration
allow the person to sense and respond to relevant information coming both from
within the mind and from outside stimuli. When you are at your peak, you impress
others by respond?ing intelligently to their input. Turning in peak performance helps you develop supe?rior self-confidence, which projects through to others. Tony Alvarez, a quality manager in a hospital, explains how peak performance helped him project self-confidence: "It was my day to make a presentation to the hospital administrators and medical chiefs about our new Total Quality Management program. I had done my homework, including researching the usual objections to this type of program in a hospital. I rehearsed my presentation alone three times in the confer?ence room where it would take place. I had my slides and my flip charts ready, and they were beautiful. "I woke up on the morning of my
presentation feeling great. My body tingled with excitement, and my vision and
hearing were sharper than usual. I knew it was going to be a good day. The
presentation went more smoothly than I could have imagined. I was on stage; this
was my day. Both the administrators and the medical chiefs were nodding their
head in agreement. I knew my program was headed for approval. Copyright © by Bizmove.com - Small Business Management. All rights reserved |
